Blogger’s Quilt Festival

I love it when the Blogger’s Quilt Festival comes around πŸ™‚ I have some more recent quilts that I’ve finished, but there is one I want to share that I made a little over and year and a half ago because I never managed to get any stellar pictures of it back then and because it’s super Springy–perfect for the Spring festival πŸ™‚

When I set out to make each of my three kids a bed quilt, I decided to start with my middle child … because, well, she’s in the middle and she deserves to be first every now and then, right? This quilt is the Annie’s Garden pattern from the book, Material Obsession and it is probably the most time consuming quilt I’ve ever made.

There is a LOT of applique on this baby. I want it to last a long time, so did it all the long way (sewing each piece right sides together with a piece of muslin, then turning it and using my machine’s blanket stitch to sew it on).

The fun part was digging through my scrap buckets trying to pick out all the fabrics. It is very scrappy, but it all “goes” somehow. I made a HUGE mess in the process–and that was back when my sewing space was a corner of our living room πŸ™‚

I started out hand quilting the whole thing, but as of then, I had never done that before and got intimidated. I ended up machine quilting all the straight lines and hand quilting around all the applique. The hand quilting really made all the flowers and hearts pop out a little bit, so I’m so glad I did that!

This is Layla with her quilt this past January, on her fourth birthday…

I cannot wait to peruse all the entries in the quilt festival!!! Cheers πŸ™‚

  1. Super CUTE!!! I am a disgruntled middle child myself, so I would like to thank you for making your middle child a quilt first. Thanks for sharing! (oh and those toesies up top are adorable!)

  2. Turned out great, love the combo of applique and piecing and hand and machine quilting. Very charming.
Come see my entries, #212 repro cheddar stars and #216 antique 1850 applique flower garden

  3. Layla looks so cute on her fabulous quilt! What a darling quilt…I have that book and made the one with birdies in the window. Want to make several others and this might have to be one of them. Thanks for sharing and have a great day
